Soil spectral inference workshop at RDA, Korea

I requested Dr. Budiman Minasny to conduct the soil spectral inference workshop at RDA National Academy of Agricultural Science, Suwon in February 2013. RDA has a laboratory with near infrared spectroscopy for measuring soil reflectance. However its use is not optimized because the processing of the spectral data require advanced statistical analysis. Dr. Minasny has done many research articles in this topic and so we invited him to present this workshop.

The workshop was attended by 12 staffs at RDA, 2 postgraduate students from University of Seoul, 1 professor from Daegu University, and 1 director of Sangji Scientific Ltd. (Commercial company). It is very useful as we are learnt how to process the spectra from the basic data handling to advanced data manipulation for prediction. It is new way of teaching, rather than just presenting results from research, we are able to analyse our own data. With hands-on practical we are able to replicate what researchers do in their paper and apply them for relevance to our own data. As the result, we are able to analyse our data, and able to use the spectra to predict soil organic matter and other soil properties as well for Korean soils optimally.

Sincerely,
